Derek Holland was born in Chesterfield in 1927. During the 60s and early 70s his large colourfield paintings were regularly exhibited at London’s Redfern Gallery. However, he later began to make drawings of the rural towns and villages of northern France; back in the studio these became the starting point for further exploration. Gradually, the paintings became ever looser and the colours more intensely high key, and his final mature style developed; the increasingly restless brushmarks blending together into a sublime radiant harmony.
Produced for the exhibition ‘Paintings of Brittany’ first shown at Plymouth Arts Centre, Aug–Sep 2000.
